Hello my friends,

yesterday my issue of SWAMP THING (#10 - with my Detective cumpa' Scott Snyder) came out in all stores around the Country.
Hope you guys picked it up: the reception so far has been great and the love is pouring in.
CBR gave it 4.5 stars out of 5, ComicVine gave it a 5 stars out of 5, IGN gave it a 9 out of 10. Plus it's book/pick of the week on several comic related websites, so it means the book came out ok :)
Will post some of the reviews/comments later this week.

While in stores, pls consider picking up also two other great books I provided covers for: THE SPIDER #2 by my Black Panther partner David Liss and artist Colton Worley, and THE LONE RANGER #6 by Ande Parks and Esteve Polls (really good, solid western book).

Cheers,
Francesco

Star Trek TNG - Doctor Who ~ Assimilation 2

Star Trek TNG - Doctor Who ~ Assimilation 2 #4
~~ Click on the image for biggie ~~

Hey guys,

as you all know, I am a HUGE fan of DOCTOR WHO (remember the minimalist posters I have done for the last season?) so you can imagine how happy I was when IDW asked me to do a variant cover for their STAR TREK TNG - DOCTOR WHO crossover titled ASSIMILATION 2.

The result is the cover above (click on it for the bigger view)

This issue is out in August and it's available now for pre-orders.

~~ From IDW website:
Launching in May, STAR TREK: THE NEXT GENERATION/DOCTOR WHO: ASSIMILATION2 will feature fan-favorite villains the Borg and the Cybermen as they create an unholy alliance resulting in potential disaster for all humanity. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise find themselves joining forces with the Doctor and his companions, with the fate of the galaxy hanging in the balance.

This eight-issue series will be written by Scott and David Tipton, the authors of critically acclaimed Star Trek: Infestation, with a helping hand from longtime Doctor Who writer Tony Lee, and will feature fully painted artwork by J.K. Woodward (Fallen Angel). ~~

Hope you guys dig the cover :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Dark Horse Comics: Powered By Creators
Room: 4C1-2
Time: 4:00 - 5:00

Just over twenty-five years ago, Dark Horse stepped into the comics-publishing arena with a different agenda. While the publisher has gained much notoriety for its popular licensed titles, like Buffy and Star Wars, one mission remains the same: to give comics top creators a venue for showcasing their work and retaining their ownership of it. Join Dark Horse's public relations director, Jeremy Atkins, along with a cast of premier talent, for news on all of Dark Horse's 2012 publishing launches and new Dark Horse Presents stories. Guests include Steve Niles (Criminal Macabre), Steve Lieber (Alabaster), Francesco Francavilla (Black Beetle), Sanford Greene (Rotten Apple), Ethan Nicolle (Axe Cop), Adam Warren (Empowered), Paul Tobin (Falling Skies), and Brian Wood (The Massive), and a few surprise drop-ins!

Signings: I will sign books and prints (and thank you for supporting me by buying my stuff)! If you have a lot of books and there's a long line, I may ask you to let me do it in batches just to be considerate to others. This year, I'm going to borrow a great idea from Tim and set up signing times so I can better manage my allotted sketching time. It seems to work well for Tim and his fans, so let's see if it'll help me stay on track. So, the first and last hour of each day, I will sign your books. I'll also sign the last 15 minutes of each hour (unless I'm at a panel).

PLEASE NOTE: the above times apply to signatures only - for STOP&CHAT and handshakes, pls feel free to stop anytime, as long I am at the table ;)

Convention Sketches: Yes, I will be doing sketches at the show. I can't do any sketching prior to the show due to deadlines.
The sketches will be 9x12 Bristol, single-figure, some background, done with pencils, inks and probably washes.
My prices are: Head/Bust - $60; Full-Figure $200.
I try to do 8-10 of these per day. It's done first-come, first-serve, so just come see me early to get on the list. I will do a new list every day. I take cash or credit card (assuming this new iPad gizmo works).
Below is a sample of a 9x12 full figure, fully inked sketch.

Con Sketch

Prints & Books: I'm flying so I won't have a large variety of prints with me. I'll definitely have some Black Beetle, Poe, Lovecraft, and USRA prints. I'll also have a limited quantity of my sketchbooks (Chiaroscuro Vol.1 & Schermoscuro Vol.1). If there's something specific you want, I will gladly pre-sell these to you and you can pick them up at the show and save some shipping. Just email me for details and availability.

And the winner is...

Hey guys,

The Academy Awards were on last night, but those were not the only awards being given yesterday: not too long before Oscar night started, I found out I won the 2011 Commie, the comic book Oscars of Geek Speak, for the Best Artist category!

BEST ARTIST: FRANCESCO FRANCAVILLA
Francavilla’s dark pulpy art looks like Jack Kirby and Joe Kubert’s finest line work doused in orange neon and black shadows, moody yet oh so vibrant. Such sumptuous art elevated some equally awesome comics in 2011, most notably Detective Comics and Black Panther: The Man Without Fear, the latter written by San Antonio novelist David Liss.

I wanted to share it in here because, c'mon, a raygun shaped award has to be shared! :)

You can see all the other Commies winners here:

Thank you so much, guys, and pls allow me to publicly thank everyone who has been giving love and support to all my work in 2011, from my lovely wife to the publishers to the readers. Here's to hope you will enjoy my new work and new stories (have you pre-ordered The Black Beetle already? :)) in this new year as well. :)

Cheers,
Francesco
