They Are Coming...

Giant Robot Week
Giant Robot Week
~~ click on the image for giant WALLPAPER view ~~

They... WHO? You ask.

The GIANT ROBOTS! Yep, in July I will have finally a Giant Robot Week :)
I had planning to do one for such a long time, so I am very happy to finally do it this month :)
It's not gonna be next week (gotta some work to do) but def it will happen in July.

I am also taking 1 suggestion (already have a few robots lined up) so feel free to throw in your favorite robot suggestion by replying to this post: you guys have a week from now. The winner (the one I will decide to include in the gallery) will receive a signed archival print of the chosen robot.
Rule #1: if you see already entered the robot you liked, then pick another one that has not been entered yet. There can be only one winner so if there are multiple entries of the same robot, I will only consider the first one who entered it.
Rule #2: this is GIANT ROBOTS week, so try to suggest giant robots (mostly from Japanese anime) instead of small robots (like C3PO, for example).
EDIT!!!
Rule #3: please enter only 1 suggestion/name. For multiple names in the same post, I will only consider the first one.
Rule #4: check the above chart to make sure your entry has not been named yet. Also: small robots will be in red and mostly likely not considered for the grand prize.

PRIZES! Since there are so many great suggestions, I am thinking to add a couple of extra prizes for runner-ups, randomly picked among all entries: the prize is a large archival print of the group shot of all entries (like the one above, insilhuetts, but compelted with allt he robots suggested during the week) :)
Same print will go to the winner as well, in addition to the single robot one.

Of course, please spread the news: the more the better :)

Alright, everyone is ready? GO! :)

Cheers,
Francesco

I'd love to see Venus A from Great Mazinger, always liked it, and her palette would fit your style I think.

It's not a Japanese robot, but how can you not at least consider the Iron Giant?

Love all the work. Thanks so much for sharing.

Francesco,

Great idea. I'll nominate Zoidzilla - was such a fan of the comic series in the Marvel UK days, and, hey, it's a giant mecha godzilla!

Paradigm City's protector: Za Biggu O (The Big O).

Not the best name, but an awesome sci-fi noir character. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Big_O)

Such a great mystery series.

Great idea Francesco!

If it's Giant Robot week we definitely need Giant Robo!
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Giant_Robo_(tokusatsu)
Or as I knew it in my youth: Johnny Socko and his Flying Robot!

http://narrativagrafica.mforos.com/1651934/8485594-johnny-sokko-and-his-flying-robot-giant-robo-1967/

This sounds like it's going to be a fun week!

I don't know the names you have for them, but my favorite Super robots always were "El Vengador" (Steel jeeg, or kotetsushin Jeeg) and "Supermagnetron" (Magne Robo Gakin). "Iron 28" is also a favorite of mine, and he deserves a spot being one of the founders of the genre ("Tetsujin 28-go", also known as "Gigantor")

Robert Hack said...

Dang! I was just about to suggest Jet Jaguar!

Well, I had another good choice already in mind: The K1 Robot from Doctor Who. This appreared in the 4th Doctor's first story, ROBOT.

It's not giant but the robot from Metropolis would be freakin' AWESOME!

Francesco,

Thinking outside the box here but how awesome would it be to do MechaGodzilla?! He's got my vote. Thanks!

DonAlejandro said...

Please make the megazord from Power Rangers.

Esteban Pedreros said...

I could swear the wallpaper wasn't there yesterday... anyway, since two of my choices are already there.

I was a huge fan of Robotech (still am), so a Valkirie/Veritech is a must (if possible, that one episode when Rick Hunter uses a prototype full of misiles), or a cyclone if possible, because while they weren't Giant robots, they were absolutely great. There was a short lived show called Daltanias (Future Robo Daltanius), that was awesome story-wise, but the design wasn't all that good. And finally I also liked the the robot from Saber Rider (Star Musketeer Bismarck), I believe that what I liked the most was the theme song, but anyway, the robot (Ramrod) was great... I mean, how many Giant space cowboy robots are there?

Francesco Francavilla said...

Esteban,
I did the chart with all the robots entered so far, and yours is int here too (JEEG) :)
The chart is for everyone else who check this today: I am planning to update the chart every day with all the new entries also becuase the final chart will be made as a print.
Wonderign if I should also add the names of the person who entered each one... mhh..

Keep em coming, guys, and read the rules :)

Cheers,
Francesco

Either the Zeta Gundam from..well...Gundam Zeta, or the Sazabi from Char's Counterattack (also a Gundam movie).

Esteban Pedreros said...

See?, I wasn't crazy :D
but I ommited one of the rules, dang!

Well Steel Jeeg is there so I'm happy. I doubt you have the time but here is the intro in spanish for that show... and a team-up between many of Go nagai's Robots against their common enemies.

I hope you like them.

How about the Cyber-King from Doctor Who?

Oh, man, you have to do Death's Head, yes? He was in Gillen and Stevens' S.W.O.R.D. from Marvel, recently, but he dates back years into the UK imprint of Marvel.

I would love to see your interpretation of him, please!

Learn more here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Death%27s_Head

He's a robotic bounty hunter, but he calls himself a "freelance peace-keeping agent". Be perfect for you, and a diverse choice apart from the other robots you already have.

These'll test your tolerance of 2000AD - Dave Gibbons' Charlie from Ro-Busters or Mick McMahon's Mad George from A.B.C. Warriors.

When you think about it, Pat Mills must have had a soft spot for giant robots: both of those stories are the emotional core of their respective strips.

Mark Kardwell said...

Just posted a Dave Gibbons' Charlie and a Mick McMahon Mad George at my blog for everyone's perusal.

Unicron. please?

I know you already have soundwave on there but I hope you would consider Unicron. He's pretty much the biggest, baddest robot of all time. I mean he eats planets. Come on, he'd give galactus a run for his money.

Can I add multiple entries in multiple posts?

I see a predominance of humanoid looking robots so, What about Yattawan, the giant dog robot from Yatterman?

There's the animated version and also the one from Takashi Miike's film adaptation...

Wrothy said...

How about ED-209?

If he's not big enough for you, then there's always Gort.

Unknown said...

Does Data from Star Trek TNG count? He's not big in size, but he sure is in awesomeness. :)

wing said...

Angel 05 from Evangelion

Esteban Pedreros said...

I know he is not a giant Robot, but you have to make a WALL-E.
Maybe a WALL-E at Lilliput, or in an Earth populated by cockroaches.

Neue Ziel said...

You can always add the Getter Robo from Shin Getter Robo: Armageddon. It is the shiznit!

Francesco Francavilla said...

Alright guys, we are at 45, thanks also to some of my childhood faves I just added like Gordian (the matrioska robot! :)), Daltanius, the Great Mazinger, and Daitarn 3.
HA! The memories... :D

As stated in the rules, each person can only enter one suggestion (;) @ Esteban), so I am hoping to see a few "new" faces coming in and suggest new robots that aren't listed yet. It would be cool if I had at least 50 entries to chose from :)
Deadline for entering is tomorrow. Bring it on! :)

CHeers,
Francesco

Esteban Pedreros said...

Umm, sorry, I got carried away. But there are so many great Giant robots that nobody else was mentioning.

You've got to draw Ramrod (Saber Rider), even if it's a non elegible entry :)

See? carried away, again.

So, I've thought and thought about this since you first posted the contest. And at this point, I am just going to have to go with my favourite Gundam, the upgraded Altron Gundam from Gundam Wing.
